Most of us build our organizations as the revenue and therefore need for more people grow. It is a common and practical approach.
But if you were to start over today with your current revenue and profit margin would your organization be structured as it currently is? Most likely not!
We have all looked at and many of us worked on organization charts over the years. Generally speaking we take the needs of the business and existing talent of the organization and build the most suitable organization that will get the job done.
If this sounds familiar, you are not alone.
What if we each took a plain white sheet of paper and started with only one preconceived idea…to provide the most effective organization structure possible to satisfy today’s customers with the flexibility to be expanded to meet tomorrow’s growth needs.
What would that organization look like?
Now take the names of the current team members and put them into the right roles on the new organization chart. Most likely there will be some roles that remain empty because the right person doesn’t work here yet. Also there will most likely be a few names left over without a spot in the new organization. More on both of these scenarios later.
Next, design common goals so that we succeed and fail together and we are focused on our mutual success.
Finally raise the bar, compliance is no longer good enough, you need their need commitment.
If the only level of performance coming from an employee is compliance then you are receiving the bare minimum from them. So unless they are being paid the bare minimum and they are in a position in the organization that can accept the bare minimum performance, compliance is no longer acceptable.
Compliance is about doing the least possible while commitment is about doing the most possible.
Ask yourself which type of employee do you want?
Now ask yourself why are you still paying the compliant ones?
Back to the empty roles on the organization chart and the people left without a role. Fill those empty roles as soon as possible but only with qualified, committed people. For those without a role in the new organization, help them with a soft landing…time to find a new position, assistance finding the new position, an honest reference.
