As leaders and managers, giving feedback to your sales force is a critical part of the job. You need to motivate, train, guide and support your team on a daily basis.
As a sales manager, your group looks to you for professional growth and they need all the support and resources they can get from you.
Managing a sales team is demanding and supplying feedback that is both constructive and motivating can be even more challenging.
However, one of the most significant ways in which you can help your team is through feedback. Without it, they will not know if their methods are working and there will not be success.
So, how can you improve your feedback with your team?
- Be positive: Always start with the things your team member did well. You want your feedback to be a helpful encounter. You always need to follow up with things that can be improved and remember if no one is asking for your feedback you probably need to rethink how you are delivering it.
- Them first: Your employee should tell you two items that went terrific and two that didn’t. This will help reinforce the positive and set the groundwork for a conversation on what didn’t go so well.
- Support your strategies: Keep in mind your own methods for you team. Make sure to tell as well as show them what you’d like from them. Be consistent in monitoring them and giving feedback on that as well.
- Self-control and educate: It is very important to be disciplined with your feedback. This can make all the difference whether your team breaks down or is successful.
One thing to keep in mind is that not all sales people are competitive. Don’t compare your team members with each other, it will not motivate them. You must adjust your approach to fit with the person’s own driving force.
Studies have shown that most employees do not receive as much positive reinforcement as they need.
This doesn’t mean you can’t give constructive feedback, it means that you just need to balance it out with positive reinforcement.
When you do your team will be having the best year ever!
